About Gaming Tone

Gaming Tone is a small, independent site that explains PC and console gaming to beginners, and to the parents, partners and friends of people who play.

What we cover

The site explains the basics that experienced players take for granted: getting set up, what the genres are like to play, controls and remapping, accessibility options, display and audio settings, healthy habits and breaks, comfortable posture, online safety and parental controls. A glossary explains common terms.

Who it is for

Anyone new to games: adults picking up a controller for the first time, returning players who find modern menus confusing, and parents or carers who want to understand what their child is playing and how to set limits. No knowledge is assumed.

What we do not do

  • We do not review, score or rank games, and we do not recommend consoles, PCs, accessories, brands or stores.
  • We do not sell anything, and the site has no partner or affiliate links.
  • We are not connected to any game publisher, platform maker, store or rating board.
  • We are not a medical service. Pages on health give general information only.

How we write

  • We explain how features usually work rather than giving exact menu paths, because platform menus change with updates. We point you to the platform's own help pages for current steps.
  • For health topics such as eyes, posture, sleep and problem gaming, we give widely accepted general advice and suggest seeing a doctor or other professional when something hurts or worries you.
  • For age ratings and online safety, we describe how the systems work and suggest checking the rating boards and platform safety pages directly.
  • The genre charts are rough profiles of typical games, not scores. Any individual game can differ.

Platform names on this site

When a page mentions consoles, PCs or stores, it is only to say where a kind of setting usually lives. We describe features in general terms, such as family settings, button remapping or two-step verification, because every major platform now offers some version of them. Product names and trademarks belong to their owners, and a mention here is not an endorsement.

About the charts

The hexagon charts on the genre pages are drawn by code from a small table of values, one row per genre. The same table feeds every chart on the site, so the home page and the genres page always agree.

Platforms add and change features often, and we would rather fix an error than leave it. If something here is out of date or unclear, please let us know through the contact details on our privacy page.
